Luke 23:26–43
Be still: Lord God, help me to pause and look upon the Cross today. Quiet the distractions around me so that I can see the depth of your love and hear your words of grace. Amen.

Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.' (v34)
Encounter: When we’ve been wronged, our human nature often drives us to strike back, get angry, or, at the very least, hold back our kindness. We want justice and for the other person to feel the weight of our pain.
As Jesus hangs on the cross, the human response would be anger or a demand for vindication. He’s entirely innocent, yet he’s been beaten, mocked and stripped of his dignity. The religious leaders sneer at him, the soldiers offer him sour wine and even one of the criminals hanging next to him hurls insults.
Yet, in the midst of physical torment and psychological cruelty, Jesus speaks words that go well beyond all human logic: ‘Father, forgive them...’. He doesn't wait for an apology; he doesn't demand a retraction. Instead, he intercedes for the very people driving the nails into his hands.
Not long after, when the second criminal recognises his own guilt and asks to be remembered, Jesus responds with incredible generosity: ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.’ From the place of ultimate suffering, Jesus offers ultimate grace. He offers forgiveness to his executioners and a home to a dying thief. This is the radical heart of the Gospel. Jesus uses his final breaths not to condemn the world and those who hurt him, but to open the gates of heaven to the broken and the undeserving.
Apply: Is there someone in your life whom you’re struggling to forgive? Bring that person before God today. Look at the Cross, remember the radical forgiveness Jesus extended to you and ask him for grace.
Devote: Lord Jesus, thank you for your grace and for forgiving me when I didn't deserve it. Give me a heart like yours, one that is quick to forgive and ready to extend grace to those who hurt me.
