Full Filled

Ephesians 3 v17-19 (NIV) —

‘And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge - that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.’

Can I encourage you to find a special space to be quiet and still. My daughter would often talk about her ‘prayer perch’, which reminds me of a video I saw of a huge, gushing, noisy waterfall; the camera focused in on a small bird behind the forceful water, peacefully asleep and in the dry. Maybe life feels a bit like this waterfall, rushing, noisy and out of control. Take a few minutes to sit on your ‘prayer perch’.

Can we begin to absorb the boldness of Paul’s prayer; his faith never wavered in the expectation of what God can do.
When were our prayers for others so big?

The spring bulbs I am planting now don’t look great, but I know if I put them in good compost, I will have an array of daffodils and tulips next year. Paul says we are rooted and established in the soil of God’s love.
Maybe we find it hard to grasp that God loves us this much. 

Maybe we feel unworthy, or we’ve done things in the past we can’t seem to forget.
Maybe we’re facing circumstances that call God’s love into question.
Maybe we feel disappointed with God.

We say to our children ‘we love you to the moon and back’. This is God’s version:
Wide - millions of people around the world;
Length - throughout the ages to the beginning of time;
Height - up to the heavens;
Deep - into the darkest places of sin and sickness.
Notice that these directions make the sign of the cross. 

This is beyond head knowledge, Paul’s prayer is that we be filled in our inner most being, not just half full, but to the full measure of God’s love and wisdom.

Can you pray this for someone you care for?
