Through God’s Eyes
Judges 6:12 (NLT)
The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, 'Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!’
I can Imagine the shock Gideon feels when the angel calls him ‘Mighty Hero’. Here he is, hiding from the enemy, afraid and disheartened and the angel calls him this name. The opposite of how he sees or feels that he is.
God sees us differently from how we see ourselves, calls us differently to how we call ourselves. My name Shalomie means ‘peace’. A name I have struggled with in my life. Shalom means wholeness and completeness. At times, I have felt anything but whole and I've struggled with peace.
However, God has reminded me that my name is not a mistake, and neither was his name for Gideon. God saw in Gideon, what he could not. God doesn’t call us or name us based on our weakest moments. We tend to make our identity how we feel. We feel weak in this moment, therefore we call ourselves weak. We failed in in this moment and call ourselves a failure.
At our lowest moment, God can come in and call out who we truly are in his eyes. The key to what makes Gideon a ‘Mighty Hero’ is not his own mustered up strength or motivation; what makes Gideon a Mighty Hero is God’s presence, the Lord with him. What makes us what we truly are, is the presence of the Lord. It’s God in us, It’s God through us and God empowering and guiding us through his Spirit. His Spirit empowers us to be what we cannot be on our own.
I invite you to spend time with God. To ask him what he calls you and how he sees you. To begin to replace lies with his truth and to allow his presence to empower you to be who he says you are.
Prayer - Thank you, Lord, for your presence. I pray you would be speaking into our identity, replacing lies with your truth. Reveal to us how you see us. Help us to see ourselves through your eyes Lord.
