Hebrews 2:1-9
Be Still: Lord, help me see Jesus clearly today. Slow me down so I can grasp the depth of the salvation you have won for me. Amen
Read: Hebrews 2:1-9
But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honour because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. (v9)
Encounter: It can be hard to picture what it really meant for Jesus to come down to earth and live a human life. He was seated higher than the angels, crowned in glory – yet he chose to make himself the lowest of all, taking the form of a servant. The closest image I can think of to this is picturing King Charles scrubbing the toilets at your local McDonalds. And even that doesn’t come close to capturing the humiliation and ridicule Jesus faced during his life on earth.
Jesus didn’t just lower his status – he stepped fully into suffering. He was misunderstood, rejected, mocked, and ultimately executed in one of the most brutal ways imaginable. He carried the weight of the world, every sin placed on his shoulders as his flesh was torn and his side pierced.
How can it be that the greatest of all, the highest, the most glorious, would willingly place himself in such a position? Hebrews reminds us that Jesus tasted death for everyone. He went there so that we would never have to.
Isn’t that wild? We will never have to experience true and final death because of the eternal life that Jesus has won for us. Hallelujah! This can only point to the depths of his love for us, and the Cross shows just how far he was willing to go to bring us back to God. Let that be your reason to praise today.
Apply: What does it stir in you to know that Jesus willingly chose the lowest place for your sake? How might this truth shape the way you trust him today?
Devote: Jesus, thank you for choosing the Cross and tasting death on my behalf. Help me live in awe of your humility and respond with gratitude, trust, and worship.
