Hebrews 2:10-18

Be Still: Lord, would you meet me in your Word today. Help me see you clearly and rest in the truth that you see and know every part of me. Amen

Read: Hebrews 2:10-18

For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. (v17-18)

Encounter: There is no better feeling than confiding in a friend – or maybe even a stranger – and suddenly having that moment of ‘ohhh… you get it’. You understand me because you’ve been through a similar, or maybe even the same situation. There is such comfort and power in the wise counsel that comes from someone who has endured the same experience as you and has walked out the other side.

When we hear that Jesus became fully human in every way, it means he would have had to endure all the heartache, pain, suffering, joy, surprise, loss, annoyance, excitement, discouragement (I could go on) that any other human experiences in a lifetime. He is no stranger to the full spectrum of human emotions. He didn’t bypass the difficult parts of being a man – he entered right into them.

Wow. That suddenly changes things, doesn’t it? Rather than God being some far-off, mystical being up in the clouds, he becomes personal. Close. Understanding. Like a big brother who consoles and cares. Like a loving parent who says, 'I get it.' Or a grandparent who can offer sound advice from a great well of wisdom.

Jesus endured it all so that our father God could have proximity to us and not in a superficial way, but in a deeply meaningful and personal way. When we come to him with our struggles, doubts, and questions, we come to someone who truly gets it, yes truly!

Apply: Where in your life do you need the comfort of knowing that God ‘gets it’? What would it look like to bring that honestly to him today?

Devote: Jesus, thank you that you chose to become fully human. Help me trust you with every part of my life, knowing that you understand me and meet me with compassion and grace.
