Hebrews 3:1-6

Be Still: Lord, help me slow down and fix my thoughts on you. Quiet the noise around me and within me so I can see you clearly today. Amen

Read: Hebrews 3:1-6

Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. (v1)

Encounter: Distraction is a friend I think most of us are well-acquainted with. Sometimes it's random where our mind wanders, but often our attention naturally fixes on whatever sits most prominently in our view. Think back to your bedroom walls as a teenager, for lots of us they would have been covered in posters – pop stars, athletes, heroes. You didn’t have to try to think about them; they were constantly in front of you, shaping your imagination and your daydreams.

In today's passage, the writer of Hebrews invites us to do something intentional: fix our thoughts on Jesus. Now I've realised this doesn’t mean just trying harder to ‘have more spiritual thoughts’; rather we do this is by placing Jesus directly in the forefront of our everyday lives – making him unavoidable. When Jesus becomes central, our wandering attention begins to realign back onto him, our thoughts fixed on him.

How? By prioritising time in his presence, opening up the Word, prayer, worship, investing in community with fellow believers. They aren’t practices that earn our way into God’s good books; in fact, they don’t earn us anything – they simply place Jesus 'slap bang' in our line of sight. And over time, what we regularly place before us, shapes what we think about, what we love, and how we live.

When Jesus is consistently in view, we find it easier to hear his voice, enter his presence, and acknowledge his work in our lives. Our focus slowly shifts from distraction to devotion.

Apply: What would it look like to put Jesus directly in your line of sight this week? Which rhythms or practices could help make thinking about him unavoidable in your day-to-day life?

Devote: Jesus, I confess how easily my attention drifts. Help me fix my thoughts on you. May my focus lead to deeper love, trust, and obedience to you.
