Lessons From The Garden: See For Real
1 Timothy 1:5 (NLV)
We want to see our teaching help you have a true love that comes from a pure heart. Such love comes from a heart that says we are not guilty and from a faith that does not pretend.
One of my work colleagues once described my garden as being a well-manicured garden. I chuckled to myself when she said that as I know that is not true. The funny thing is that this work colleague has never actually been in my garden! She has only seen photos. And yes, a carefully angled photo might give the impression of perfection. However, if you spent time in my garden, you would soon discover the weeds in the lawn, the brambles growing in the hedge, and the pile of rubble in an area of the garden which is still to be sorted.
How often do we get the wrong impression of someone by what they post on social media, or how they ‘present’ on a Sunday morning at church? If we are to truly get to know someone, we need to spend time with them share honestly with each other about the struggles we have, difficult situations we are walking through - the highs and the lows.
One of my best friendships was with a lady I met at work. At first I thought we would never get on. We had very little in common, but over time we got to know each other, and our friendship blossomed - she taught me so much about generosity and hospitality. I am so thankful for her friendship and the lessons it taught me about not judging, but loving someone, flaws and all.
May I encourage you that if you are not part of a Team or Group at Gas Street, or in your own church, to do so. This provides a great opportunity to get to know your fellow christians, to build friendships and a sense of belonging, and allows people to get to know you too.
Prayer - Lord, help me to be open to being a friend to those you have placed around me. Help me to love people as you love me.
