More Of Him, Less Of Me
John 3:30 (NIV) —
‘He must become greater; I must become less.’
We live in a culture that is heavily focussed on self. Everywhere you look there is a message: 'I must put myself and my happiness first.' We make certain choices to improve our lives and while most of these choices are not inherently bad, when they become our sole focus or passion we are making an idol out of them and taking the focus away from God.
Bob Goff puts it like this: 'We build castles all the time, out of our jobs and our families and the things we’ve purchased. Sometimes we even make them out of each other. Some of these castles are impressive too. Lots of people come to admire what we’ve built over the course of our lives and tell us what great castles we have. But Jesus told his friends we weren’t supposed to spend our lives building castles. He said he wanted us to build a kingdom, and there’s a big difference between building a castle and building a kingdom.' *
We often want to increase in personal importance and build our own castles but here in John 3:30, John the Baptist shows us a different model. A counter-cultural, kingdom-building model. John provides the answer as to how to build that Kingdom - Jesus must become greater, and we must become less.
Prayer - Jesus, help us to fix our eyes on you. Help me to focus on you today. Help me to lay down anything hinders me from experiencing more of you.
